As a land grant institution, UCLA acknowledges the Gabrielino/Tongva peoples as the traditional land caretakers of Tovaangar (Los Angeles basin, So. Channel Islands).
I have the honor of being the inaugural Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. Welcome to the website for the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. Our Mission page explains our fundamental purpose. The Work page describes what the Office does and the Teams pages describe the various teams that work together toward our goal of building equity for all. Layout of the site. The navigation bar should be self-explanatory. The term “Public Accountability” might be a little unfamiliar. The purpose is to provide different counts and measures of our performance as well as the University’s. This Office should be held accountable for action and results, not just talk and promises. One way to promote accountability is to start measuring what we’ve done and how. We’re providing you data so that you can hold us accountable. One other page that’s crucially important is Report An Incident. This will become the central portal through which members of our community can report acts of discrimination.
Fast iteration. The spirit of my Office is entrepreneurial, agile, more like a “Silicon Beach” startup than an ossified, bureaucratic, government agency. We won’t be shy experimenting with different approaches and iterating frequently. Feedback. You probably will have comments and reactions to this website. Feel free to e-mail us feedback, both the good and the bad — even the ugly. Our goal is to respond quickly to your concerns. As I hope you can tell, we are “rebooting” how we do equity, diversity, and inclusion at UCLA. But we need your help as we ramp up the learning curve, to challenge conventional wisdom and transform UCLA into a fundamentally fairer place — for all of us. Quite literally, we are “building equity.” Stay tuned for more. Sincerely, Jerry Kang Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
