Dear Colleagues:

I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Devon Carbado, effective August 1, 2016, as the inaugural Associate Vice Chancellor, BruinX (AVC), a multidisciplinary unit within UCLA’s Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. BruinX engages in various research, development, and intervention projects connected to equity, diversity, and inclusion based on evidence, experiments, and analysis. I could not think of anyone better suited than Devon to take on this new role.

As AVC, Professor Carbado will lead and manage the BruinX unit and its staff by providing critical scholarly engagement, strategic planning, and project management. A gifted communicator and experienced administrator, he will also make sure that we can effectively translate findings into policy change and action. Professor Carbado will also serve as a senior member of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion’s leadership and provide advice and counsel to me and my staff.

Professor Carbado brings highly relevant experience to his new role, including nearly twenty years as faculty member at the UCLA School of Law. He has won numerous teaching awards, including the University’s Distinguished Teaching Award and the School of Law’s Rutter Award for Teaching Excellence. Professor Carbado also arrives with multiple terms of distinguished service as the School of Law’s Vice Dean for Faculty and Research.

As AVC, Devon will be available to connect with campus partners by email (dcarbado@equity.ucla.edu) and office phone (310-206-7411). Please join me in welcoming him to this new role at UCLA.

My best regards,

Jerry Kang
Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
