Dear Bruin Community:

Welcome back and welcome to this new year. As we start anew, what is your purpose? What motivates you? Who inspires your journey? Purpose is personal — and collective, too. We don’t live, learn and thrive alone. Instead, our lives find meaning through those with whom we connect along the way. What we gain and what we lose happens among people and within communities.

UCLA’s Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) bears witness to the power of the collective in our interactions with the many students, staff, faculty, alumni and partners whom we serve. We know first-hand the power each person has to cause harm or to create possibility. Our focus this quarter is on helping UCLA harness the positive power of community.

Here are several of our new initiatives aimed at building connections and boosting inclusion. First, learn about the new EDI Education Series, which provides a shared educational experience for all employees. Imagine the transformational impact an empowered collective UCLA workforce has to advance a culture of inclusion and dignity. Second, we are celebrating seven Bruins who have earned the 2022 EDI Student Leadership Award for their contributions to advancing equity, diversity and inclusion. We’re sponsoring several exciting events with other UCLA teams, including a February keynote lecture by United Nations Expert Member Gay McDougall, to provide opportunities for people to connect across shared interests. Finally, learn about the analysis of two new reports — the Final Report of the Academic Senate and Administration Joint Task Force on Investigatory and Judiciary Processes (PDF) and EDI’s Public Accountability Report 7.0 (PDF) — providing guidance on how to build better systems for addressing harms and misconduct at UCLA. These efforts and more are driven by our mission to ensure that every person is valued and treated with dignity. Serving this mission and helping fellow Bruins is our purpose.

Join us to advance value-driven change at UCLA. Learn more, come to an upcoming event, join the EDI Network or share your feedback at WeListen@equity.ucla.edu.

Sincerely,

Anna Spain Bradley
Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity & Inclusion
