Celebrating Women in Leadership at UCLA
On March 9, 2023, members of the University community joined together to celebrate women in leadership at UCLA. Led by the Academic Personnel Office’s Associate Vice Chancellor for Faculty Development Chris Dunkel Schetter and Administrative Analyst Sydney Truong, and co-hosted by Special Assistant Carole Goldberg, the event celebrated the history of women in leadership at UCLA and honored the contribution of recent women leaders.
Beginning in the late 1990s, former Academic Senate Chairs Judith Smith and Carole Goldberg organized the Association of Academic Women (AAW), which sponsored events designed to foster networking and mentoring among female faculty. These AAW events featured distinguished speakers, including one of the early researchers on cognitive bias, Professor Virginia Valian, whose 1999 book was Why So Slow? The Advancement of Women (MIT Press). These events resumed in March 2023 following the pandemic, with great turnout and enthusiasm from all attendees.
