History of the UCLA Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI)

Upholding our commitment to the EDI Mission at UCLA and beyond, below please find a brief overview of the history of the UCLA Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI).

2012: The Moreno Committee

Responding to concerns raised by faculty regarding persistent racial bias, discrimination, and intolerance at the university, Chancellor Gene Block and then-EVC/P Scott L. Waugh established an independent, Blue-Ribbon Committee to investigate: The Moreno Committee, chaired by retired California Supreme Court Justice, the Honorable Carlos Moreno.

2012: The Moreno Report

In the resulting Moreno Report, UCLA was found to underperform and have inadequate policies and procedures to prevent and address discrimination. In response to the report findings, former UC President Janet Napolitano ordered all UC campuses to take measures to address incidents of discrimination, bias and harassment.

2015: Creation of the Office of EDI

Addressing the recommendations of the Moreno Report and taking measures to address incidents of discrimination, bias and harassment, the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) was born.

2015: Inaugural Vice Chancellor Jerry Kang

Inaugural Vice Chancellor for EDI, Jerry Kang, established a foundation and direction for the University in "building equity for all."

2020: Vice Chancellor Anna Spain Bradley

Anna Spain Bradley appointed as the new Vice Chancellor for EDI, cementing the mission of the EDI office as "providing pathways of success and dignity for all."

2023: Interim Vice Provost Mitchell Chang

Mitchell Chang appointed as Interim Vice Provost and Head of the EDI Office, continuing efforts to advance inclusive excellence and supporting the Bruin community in honoring its commitment to EDI values.
