UCLA Student Surveys

A number of surveys are administered to UCLA students, many of which contain items related to campus climate and EDI topics. Below we list surveys that are current and to which we have access to data. There are other surveys, but they don’t meet these conditions.

CIRP Freshman Survey

The CIRP Freshman Survey is an annual survey, sponsored by the Higher Education Research & Information (HERI). The survey is administered to incoming college Freshmen at UCLA by the Student Affairs Information and Research Office (SAIRO).

Although the survey is not explicitly about campus climate or EDI topics, there are a few relevant items embedded in the instrument. The survey also asks students to self-report transgender status, gender identification, sexual orientation, race/ethnicity, and citizenship. To view reports and findings on UCLA students, visit SAIRO’s CIRP Freshman Survey website.

Ad hoc summary data reporting by department or other sub-population may be requested from SAIRO using this online request form. These reports are subject to cell size minimums to protect student privacy.

Doctoral Experience Survey

The UCOP Doctoral Experience Survey creates a picture of doctoral students’ academic progress, skills, participation in professional development, satisfaction with advising and mentorship, sources of financial support, and career aspirations.

Although the survey is not explicitly about climate, data can be disaggregated by campus, gender, race/ethnicity, and residency status.

Graduate and Professional Student Survey

The Graduate and Professional Student Survey (GPSS) is an internal survey, developed by SAIRO in collaboration with other UCLA institutional research offices, to assess a variety of issues relevant to graduate and professional students. For more information on survey design, background, and findings, visit the SAIRO GPSS website.

Ad hoc summary data reporting by department or other sub-population may be requested from SAIRO using this online request form. These reports are subject to cell size minimums to protect student privacy.

Graduating Senior Survey

The Graduating Senior Survey (GSS) is an annual survey designed and administered by the UCLA Center for the Advancement of Teaching. The survey collects information on graduating senior students’ UCLA experiences. To learn more about survey background and design, visit the UCLA Senior Survey website.

The GSS contains four climate items. This Campus Climate webpage summarizes students’ responses to these items. For additional information and to view longitudinal analyses, visit the SAIRO GSS webpage.

Master’s Completion Survey

The Master’s Exit (Completion) Survey is an annual survey developed by the UCLA Graduate Division. The survey contains a set of items designed to measure climate and obstacles to success. For more information about the survey, contact the Institutional Technology and Institutional Research Office in the Graduate Division.

National College Health Assessment

The National College Health Assessment (NCHA) was developed by the American College Health Association (ACHA) to collect information on the knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and health behaviors of students. For more information on survey development and background, visit the ACHA’s NCHA webpage.

For more information on UCLA’s participation and to view reports and findings, visit SAIRO’s NCHA webpage. Limited ad-hoc summary reporting based on survey variables is available through SAIRO using this online request form. Reports are subject to cell size minimums to protect student privacy.

Transfer Student Survey

The Transfer Student Survey (TSS) was designed internally, by SAIRO, as a companion piece to the CIRP Freshman Survey. Like the CIRP Freshman Survey, incoming students are surveyed before they come to UCLA. For more information on survey development, background, and findings, visit SAIRO’s TSS landing page.

Ad hoc summary data reporting by department or other sub-population may be requested from SAIRO using this online request form. These reports are subject to cell size minimums to protect student privacy.

University of California Undergraduate Experience Survey (UCUES)

The University of California Undergraduate Experience Survey (UCUES) offers an in-depth examination of the undergraduate experience at the University of California overall and at each of its nine undergraduate campuses. To view information about survey development and background, visit the UCOP UCUES landing page. To view findings, visit the UCOP UCUES Data Tables landing page and SAIRO UCUES landing page.

Ad hoc summary data reporting by department or other sub-population may be requested from SAIRO using this online request form. These reports are subject to cell size minimums to protect student privacy.
