Every member of the UCLA community deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.

In 2020, UCLA’s Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion unified existing civil rights investigatory units under the new Civil Rights Office (“EDI-CRO”), which is led by the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Civil Rights. EDI-CRO’s jurisdiction covers all of UCLA’s campus and UCLA Health. EDI-CRO ensures that the university remains in compliance with applicable federal law, state law and UC policy concerning protections under Title VI and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967, the Fair Employment and Housing Act, the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008, the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978, the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act of 1994, and equal employment opportunity and affirmative action obligations.

To ensure compliance with UCLA’s obligations as a federal contractor, EDI-CRO is also responsible for the development and implementation of UCLA’s Staff Affirmative Action Plan and Academic Affirmative Action Plan.

EDI-CRO is comprised of the following units:

  • The Discrimination Prevention Office (DPO) is responsible for assessing and investigating reports of discrimination or harassment based on: race, ancestry, national origin, disability, religion, age, and other categories protected by law and University policy brought against academic personnel.
  • The Staff Diversity & Equal Employment Opportunity Compliance Office (SD&C) is responsible for assessing and investigating reports of all forms of discrimination or harassment protected by law and University policy brought against staff.
  • The Title IX Office (T9) is responsible for assessing and investigating reports of gender discrimination, sexual harassment, and sexual violence brought against any member of the campus community.
  • The UCLA ADA/504 Compliance Office (ADA/504) leads and administers all aspects of compliance throughout the UCLA and UCLA Health community with federal and state disability laws, as well as University policies and procedures pertaining to protections for students and employees with disabilities.

Discrimination and Harassment Are Expressly Prohibited

Sexual violence, sexual harassment, discrimination, and discriminatory harassment are all expressly prohibited by the University of California’s policies pertaining to students, academic personnel, and staff. UCLA takes sexual violence, sexual harassment, and discrimination very seriously.

If any member of the community has observed or experienced sexual violence, sexual harassment, or discrimination based upon any protected category, they can report the incident to the Civil Rights Office.

Protected categories include: race, color, national origin, religion, sex, gender, gender expression, gender identity, gender transition status, pregnancy, physical or mental disability, medical condition (cancer-related or genetic characteristics), genetic information (including family medical history), ancestry, marital status, age, sexual orientation, citizenship, or service in the uniformed services, including protected veterans.

Reporting Form

When you RAI here, one of the units within CRO will typically contact the individual who experienced the alleged harm (the “Complainant”) to follow up, unless the RI falls outside of CRO’s purview. In that case, CRO may refer your report to an appropriate University office for review.

Reporting is private but not confidential. CRO strives to protect the privacy of all individuals involved in a report and only shares information when necessary to respond to a report.

Confidential:

CARE

If you have experienced sexual violence, sexual assault, sexual harassment, dating/domestic violence or stalking, confidential support and guidance is available to you, including CARE. The advocate office, CARE: Advocate Office for Sexual and Gender-Based Violence and Sexual Misconduct, was created at every UC campus to provide dedicated, full-time support to survivors of sexual violence, both immediately and over the long term. These dedicated offices ensure that survivors can reach an advocate whose sole responsibility is to support their needs. The Advocate Office, which launched system wide in January 2015, is one of seven recommendations from the President’s Task Force on Preventing and Responding to Sexual Violence and Sexual Assault.
