UCLA Chancellor’s Outreach, Recruitment and Retention Task Force

UCLA has a long history and commitment to campus diversity and inclusion. These principles have manifested through extensive student outreach and retention services, which often fall to campus academic and administrative departments and student-initiated efforts. The success of student-initiated efforts has been in recognizing systems and processes that center student leadership and perspective.

On January 12, 2024, UCLA Chancellor Block announced the creation of the Chancellor’s Outreach, Recruitment and Retention Task Force to identify the ways UCLA has supported campus outreach, recruitment and retention efforts for marginalized populations, which includes student-initiated work. The Task Force’s goal is to provide updates on the work that has been and is currently being done to promote historically underserved students, along with a recommendation of which campus units are best suited to support student-initiated work.

Purpose

a diverse group of 5 people in a meeting space huddled over a laptopThe purpose of the Outreach, Recruitment, and Retention Task Force is to: 1) provide direct input on the state of the university’s outreach and retention work with current and prospective students who belong to underrepresented populations, and 2) create recommendations on how UCLA can better support the role of student-initiated efforts in this area.

The Task Force will work to create a detailed and accurate inventory of structures, supports, and efforts in place to support current and prospective underrepresented student populations. This effort will highlight current student-initiated work, administrative programs, and educational outreach and retention programs. The Task Force will also work to identify where gaps or overlaps in support may exist and recommend possible solutions to improve outreach and retention programs.

Deliverables

Specific deliverables outlined in the motion are as follows:

  • Development of a recommended governance structure, including the necessary budgeting, staffing, contracting, and data-sharing authorities across relevant departments to effectuate student outreach, recruitment and retention;
  • A comprehensive funding stream analysis, with information provided by impacted departments and reviewed by the campus’ budget, will detail existing funding available for outreach, recruitment and retention services to support the implementation of a full-scale strategy. The funding streams analysis should contain recommendations for a central budget entity to coordinate outreach, recruitment and retention dollars received from all relevant departments.
  • A set of guiding outreach, recruitment and retention definitions and metrics, principally informed by an equity-centered framework (i.e., life course, racial equity, or socioeconomic status) which reflect how students’ educational experiences and achievements can be enhanced through outreach, recruitment, and retention services.
  • Produce a report to provide direct input on the state of the University’s outreach, recruitment and retention work as well as recommendations on how UCLA can better support the role of student initiated work addressing the following questions:
  1. After compiling an inventory of how UCLA has supported outreach, recruitment and retention, how can we improve the student experience?
  2. Given the existing campus structures and the critical support offered by student-initiated outreach, recruitment and retention, which campus units can best support student-initiated work?
