Immigration & Entrepreneurship: A Conversation with Kim Luu-Ng, Human Rights Attorney and Co-owner of Cassia Restaurant
Tuesday, April 20, 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm PST

About the Event:
When Kim Luu-Ng and Bryant Ng opened Cassia in 2015, the Santa Monica restaurant was hailed as groundbreaking, with a menu that combined Vietnamese and French techniques in an approach the late Los Angeles Times food critic Jonathan Gold called “colonizing the colonizers.” Today, Cassia is widely recognized as one of the top restaurants in Los Angeles. Luu-Ng is also an attorney focused on the human rights of immigrants, drawing on her experience as a refugee from Vietnam to advocate for those seeking asylum in the U.S. In this Impact Week conversation, Luu-Ng will join Los Angeles Times columnist Frank Shyong to discuss her advocacy and entrepreneurship, and to highlight the importance of immigration to Southern California’s economy and culture.

Faculty Spotlight: Professor Miguel Unzueta on Defining Diversity
Wednesday, April 21,11:30 pm -12:30 pm PST

About the Faculty Spotlight:
Amid calls this year for better representation and more equitable hiring in corporate America, how should organizations define diversity? What does a diverse work environment look like? And what incentives drive companies to build and maintain diverse workforces? In this Impact Week faculty spotlight event, Miguel Unzueta, Professor of Management and Organizations and Senior Associate Dean of MBA Programs at UCLA Anderson, will share insights from his studies on diversity, bias, and discrimination. Unzueta’s latest research explores how people and companies define diversity and the impact that contemporary diversity definitions have on the representation of women and racial minorities in organizations.

Brand Equity: Suzan Shown Harjo on the Sixty-Year Campaign against Native American Mascots
Friday, April 23,1:00 pm – 2:00 pm PST

About the Event:
Native American activist Suzan Shown Harjo played a central role in the sixty-year campaign to retire over 2,000 Native American names, images, and mascots associated with schools and sports teams, including the high profile rebrand of the Washington Football Team last year. Renewed public attention to racism in branding has prompted major companies to reconsider consumer products like the Jeep Cherokee SUV, Land O’Lakes’ butter, and Pepsi’s Aunt Jemima syrup, that relied on appropriated imagery or stereotypes. But the transition has been uneven and incomplete, with many company names and consumer products yet to make necessary changes. Hal Hershfield, Associate Professor of Marketing and Behavioral Decision Making at UCLA Anderson, will moderate this conversation with Harjo on the path towards equitable branding.

Confronting the Digital Divid: EdTech Innovation for Educational Equity
Monday, April 19, 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm PST

About the Event:
The COVID-19 pandemic and shift to remote learning has exacerbated the many inequities in U.S. education. According to a UCLA study, 1 in 3 U.S. households has limited access to technology, and many students have struggled to keep up without the technical tools required for remote learning. Join an Impact Week panel discussion to explore how EdTech platforms can improve student learning and the ongoing relationship between technology and educational equity.
