Dear Bruin Community:
Following Anna Spain Bradley’s decision to step down as vice chancellor for equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) this summer, I am pleased to announce the appointment of UCLA Professor of Education and Asian American Studies Mitchell Chang as interim vice provost and head of our EDI office, effective July 1.
A nationally renowned scholar and experienced administrator, Professor Chang is currently serving as associate vice chancellor in the EDI office, where he has been undertaking a major initiative to evaluate UCLA faculty diversity programs and apply his findings across the campus. In his two-year interim role as vice provost, Professor Chang will continue efforts to advance inclusive excellence throughout UCLA, determine and share best practices for meeting campus EDI goals and support the Bruin community in honoring its commitment to EDI values.
A UCLA alumnus (’96, Ph.D.), Professor Chang’s research focuses on the efficacy of diversity-related initiatives on college campuses. He has written more than 100 publications and his work is cited in the landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling, Grutter v. Bollinger. His research has supported UCLA diversity and inclusion efforts including the Rising to the Challenge and Faculty Forward initiatives, and he has long served on the Moreno Report Implementation Committee.
As vice provost for equity, diversity and inclusion, Professor Chang will utilize his extensive expertise, his familiarity with the staff and structure of the EDI office, his deep relationships throughout UCLA and his dedication to research-informed best practices to help ensure that our campus is a welcoming and supportive environment where people of all backgrounds and identities can thrive. He will be a valued partner to me and, under his leadership, the EDI team will continue to be a crucial resource for our campus.
Please join Chancellor Block and me in welcoming Professor Chang to this new role and wishing him well in the months ahead.
Sincerely,
Darnell Hunt
Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost
