To the Campus Community:

It is with mixed emotions that I announce that Kathleen Salvaty, our Title IX coordinator, has accepted a new position as Title IX coordinator for the UC system. This is a new post, established by President Janet Napolitano to assure consistency in the Title IX function across the entire University of California system. The UCLA community owes Ms. Salvaty a debt of gratitude for the extraordinary intelligence, diligence, and compassion that have marked her tenure as our Title IX coordinator. She has played an integral role in advancing the mission of the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, and I am confident that we — and the rest of the UC system — will continue to benefit from her expertise and good judgment in her new role.

I would also like to announce the appointment of Jessica Price as the interim Title IX coordinator, effective February 6. Currently, Ms. Price is the UCLA Appeal Body Chair for student sexual violence and sexual harassment matters. Serving also as a Special Assistant to me, she has played a critical role in several key areas — including helping to draft investigation procedures for the Title IX and Discrimination Prevention Offices, training appeals panelists in sexual violence and sexual harassment procedures and trauma informed questioning, and overseeing the implementation of a new appeals process for Title IX student conduct matters.

Before joining UCLA, Ms. Price worked as a civil rights litigator focusing on education and disability rights. She graduated from Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles, received her bachelor’s degree with Honors from Yale University, and her law degree from Harvard. After law school, she clerked for the federal district court of the Eastern District of Louisiana and for the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

Ms. Price’s experience will ensure that our Title IX office will continue to serve the needs of our university community with the same level of excellence in this period of transition. A search for the permanent Title IX coordinator will commence soon with the goal of having that person in place by the beginning of the academic year 2017–18. The search process will be transparent and inclusive.

Sincerely,

Jerry Kang
Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
