Civil Rights Office
In 2020, UCLA’s Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion unified existing civil rights investigatory units under the new Civil Rights Office (“CRO”), which serves the entire UCLA university, hospital and healthcare system, and is led by Chandra Bhatnagar, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Civil Rights (“AVC CR”).
CRO takes a holistic approach to support its mission: to advance opportunity for all members of the UCLA community. CRO investigates all forms of discrimination, harassment and sexual violence in order to uphold civil rights protections for the UCLA community including students, staff, faculty and non-faculty academic personnel and patients. CRO’s jurisdiction covers all of UCLA’s campus and UCLA Health. Through these efforts, CRO helps advance the mission of equity, diversity and inclusion throughout UCLA and ensures that the university remains in compliance with applicable federal law, state law and UC policy concerning protections under Title VI and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972, the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and equal employment opportunity and affirmative action obligations. To ensure compliance with UCLA’s obligations as a federal contractor, CRO is also responsible for the development and implementation of UCLA’s Staff Affirmative Action Plan and Academic Affirmative Action Plan.
CRO is comprised of four units; the Discrimination Prevention Office (“DPO”), the Staff Diversity & Equal Employment Opportunity Compliance Office (“SD&C”), the Title IX Office (“T9”), and the Office for the AVC CR (“OAVC-CR”). More information about all four units can be found below:
