Fellow Bruins,
Roughly a year ago I launched CrossCheck, an online platform I’ve used to change the way we think and talk about equity, diversity and inclusion in the University. Between then and now, I’ve tried hard to avoid taking the easy way out. At the same time, I have not sought to invite controversy for controversy’s sake. My number one goal has been to encourage all of us to “up our game” with respect to our discourse about equity, diversity and inclusion and to insist that we go beyond soundbites, caricatures and slogans.
This year I am excited to launch CrossCheck Live. Same CrossCheck commitments—but “live.” This new format will allow us to tap into and dialogue with UCLA’s extraordinary pool of talent, including you. Our hope is that you will bring your questions, comments, expertise and concerns to these sessions. The moderated discussion will be interactive, nimble, fast-paced, interesting, challenging. We will strenuously avoid the standard “talking heads” model where participants deliver prepared comments that go on for too long.
Come. Listen. Teach. Engage. And learn. I look forward to seeing you there.
