What We Do
UCLA’s Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) is one team, made up of several units, on a common mission. Comprised of the Office of the Vice Chancellor, Civil Rights Office, and the Research and Bruin Engagement Office, EDI’s work extends to every corner of UCLA as we lead and advance strategies that enhance equity, diversity and inclusion; protect civil rights; and uphold dignity for all. Through our various mandates and programs, EDI serves the UCLA community to help create a more inclusive and equitable university.
Civil Rights: Made up of four units, the Discrimination Prevention Office (DPO), the Staff Diversity and Equal Opportunity Compliance Office (SD&C), the Title IX Office (Title IX) and the Office for the AVC, Civil Rights, the Civil Rights Office is charged with advancing opportunity for all members of the UCLA community. With jurisdiction covering both the UCLA campus and UCLA Health, the Civil Rights Office is mandated to ensure compliance with federal and state law and UC policy related to civil rights and to investigate all forms of discrimination, harassment and sexual violence involving students, faculty, staff and patients of UCLA Health reported to the office. In addition to its mandate to ensure protections under federal law, including under Titles VI and VII of the Civil Rights Act, Title IX of the Education Amendments Act, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Civil Rights Office also develops UCLA’s Affirmative Action Plans and publishes an annual public accountability report.
Equity, Diversity and Inclusion: To further our mission of leading and advancing strategies for enhancing equity, diversity and inclusion EDI, through its various units, provides a number of new and ongoing programs to educate and inform the UCLA community. Through our university-wide initiatives, EDI is leading in critical ways, including our work with the UCLA Committee of Disability (UCOD) and the UCLA Committee on LGBTQ Affairs, the implementation of UCLA’s Gender Recognition and Lived Name Policy and the recommendations outlined by the Moreno Report Implementation Committee. EDI also co-leads the American Indian and Pacific Islander Action Group and the Joint Task Force on Investigatory and Judiciary Processes with partners throughout the university.
EDI continues to provide education and opportunities to grow to the UCLA community through new and ongoing engagement options. In 2022, EDI updated the Faculty Search Process trainings and made them more accessible by creating an online training module for all faculty serving as members of faculty search committees. Our EDI Events provide opportunities for UCLA and the community to engage with our work. In addition, this academic year – complementing our series of campus-wide initiatives – we are launching a new initiative on Preventing Racism.
Through our programs, education opportunities, and mandates to ensure and uphold civil rights protections EDI is committed to creating a more inclusive and equitable university; and we need your help because at UCLA, EDI is everyone’s responsibility. We encourage you to stay informed and engaged by reading the Vice Chancellor’s quarterly updates, checking our website for updates, or learning more about the EDI work happening throughout UCLA on our EDI Network page.
